Lampadistis Winery

Perched somewhat awkwardly on the rugged slopes of Kalopanayiotis, the Lampadistis Wine Distillery serves as an illustration of how a strong concept leads to a thorough solution. The process of wine making and its paraphernalia provided a strong visual clue. Further artefacts and readings from the area were also filtered to provide an appropriate vocabulary. The result is a strong presence upon the site comprised of bold elements and statements.

Three barrels have become three ‘key’ cylinders, housing the three phases of wine production (fermentation, ageing, bottling). Around them are gathering spaces, above them an expansive platform for outdoor gatherings. There is an intriguing conversation developed between this object on the hill, with its confident stance amongst the vineyard terraces and the village itself below. The project is currently under construction, maturing.

Concept is a magical, convincing word to architects, when presented in that initial sketch to which is attached the purpose of producing a final product.
